A tribute to traditional Ibicencan chair by industrial designer Alban Le Henry that explores the potential of open source design

Alban Le Henry, industrial designer, unveils his latest project, SOMETHING FOR AN ISLAND, in March 2024 at La Carpintería, the foundation's art space, where he has been working for over a year. The initiative intertwines local design heritage and contemporary industrial aesthetics.

‘The Ibicencan chair is an incredibly versatile and timeless object that needs no upgrades. It's perfect just the way it is. Therefore I decided to delve into the values of the chair and use them as a starting point for this project: it is made with local materials, it is a design that belongs to everyone and therefore each family on the island developed their own version, and it is perfectly adaptable to multiple uses’. Alban Le Henry

At the heart of the project lies The ‘Island’ Family – three chairs and three stools designed for universal accessibility. Le Henry has envisioned it as an open source project, offering downloadable plans and assembly instructions, free for all to modify and develop. Thus, rather than a model to imitate, this design is a suggestion open to collective creativity.

SOMETHING FOR AN ISLAND events

La Carpintería hosts the project's launch on the 9th of March, showcasing prototypes of the 'Island' family amidst Le Henry's envisioned artisanal production. The exhibition is a workshop suspended in time, revealing every production phase.

The inauguration promises a unique experience as Le Henry and his team are assembly line, inviting attendees into the creative process. Participants can purchase kits containing pre-cut wooden boards, screws, and a publication with the instructions to craft their bespoke chairs for a nominal fee, fostering collective creativity over replication.

The closing event, set for March 22nd, transforms La Carpintería into the vibrant "Island Bar" for a participatory happening. Visitors showcase their customized chairs, exchanging insights and experiences since the project's inception.

SOMETHING FOR AN ISLAND is not just an exhibition; it's a community catalyst. It beckons communal intervention, turning each chair into a global canvas, bridging Ibiza's heritage with contemporary innovation.
